G is for Gladiolus!
From the Latin gladius, a sword
Native plant of tropical and southern Africa
Plurals - gladioli, gladioluses, glads

Hopefully, when we get around to 'G' again, I'll have blooms.

I hope your weather allows you to enjoy being outdoors today.
Have fun!

Macro Monday and Monday Mellow Yellows February 25, 2013

I planted this Amaryllis bulb in a pot in my kitchen on January 30th.
I will have to wait another day for the buds open
to know if it is 'Cinderella' or 'Red Lion.'
(That is not snow outside - just bright sunlight).

Happy Monday!

F is for Forsythia
Forsythia was named for Scottish botanist William Forsyth (1737-1804),
who was a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society.

You know Spring is near when the Forsythia begins to bud.
Last year we had an early Spring (February was very mild).
This year February is more normal (cold!)
Compare photo above (February 19, 2013) to the one below from February 23, 2012.

(February 23, 2012)  What a difference!
Forsythia flowers open in the early Spring before the leaves appear.

The leaves appear a couple of weeks after the blooming begins. (March 6, 2012)
If you want to prune Forsythia, do it as soon as the blooms fade.

Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Macro Monday and Monday Mellow Yellows February 18, 2013

Narcissus, a part of the Amaryllis family, are commonly called Daffodils or Jonquils.
Native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia,
now they are grown in many countries around the world.

Because they are easy-to-grow, they are often planted in public places.
This en masse planting is in the Mill Village neighborhood of Tupelo, MS
(All other photos are at my house)

Colors range from white to various shades of yellow and orange.
However, plant breeders are developing other colors - shades of pink, rose, and lavender.

TheTrumpet varieties have center sections that are as long or longer than the petals.

Small-Cupped Daffodils have short center sections,
no more than one-third the length of the petals.

My favorite variety is this Double Daffodil, Butter and Eggs.

According to Wikipedia, Narcissus can be used as a singular or plural noun.
However, Narcissi and Narcissuses are also acceptable in both American and British English.

Happy Monday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day February 2013

Mississippi, USA, Zone 7

Oxalis are blooming in the shelter of the porch.
Hundreds of different Oxalis, in various colors, grow all around the world,
and are sometimes called False Shamrocks or Wood Sorrels

Now at the beginning of Lent, the Hellebores, Lenten Rose, is at its most beautiful.

Daffodils, names unknown

Wind and rain have beat them down, but they are still very pretty,
even with dirt on their faces!

Aren't these little ones cute?

After a week of grey skies and drizzling rain, we have sunshine!

A few years ago I planted a lot of crocus bulbs.
I think moles or voles ate most of them.
I was delighted to see that at least a few are still here.

And in the herb garden - Rosemary!

Camera Critters February 9, 2013

While I was waiting to get my car from the repair shop, I spotted this squirrel watching me.

When I got closer, he scampered over to this other tree.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Wildbird Wednesday and Outdoor Wednesday February 6, 2013

We often see hawks perched on the power lines beside the roads.
They are wary of people, so you have to act fast to get a photo.
I think this is a Red-Shouldered Hawk.

Have a wonderful day!
